Sy vra ons of ons enige planne vir oukersaand het, terwyl ons nog glad nie eens daaraan gedink het nie. Voor een van ons 'n woord kon uitkry nooi sy ons om die aand saam met hulle gesin asook hul vriende van Windhoek in die dorp te spandeer. Ons is werklik geraak deur hulle gasvryheid, iets wat ons afrikaners jare gelede ook besit het maar so stil-stil is dit by die agterdeur uit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gerhard Kriel ry saam met ons dorp toe waar ons by Duan Spannenberg, wat die motorfietswinkel in Grootfontein besit, aangaan om te kyk of ons nie agterbande kry nie. Ons agterbande is op hulle einde, ons ry op genade! Ongelukkig kan hulle ons nie help nie en het slegte nuus vir ons: Nerens in Namibie gaan ons daardie grootte bande kry nie. Ons gaan drink saam met Gerhard 'n Tafel Lager by die rugbyklub en ontmoet van die mense wat in en om Grootfontein bly. Ons skeur onsself daar weg om gou die laaste inkopies te doen vir die volgende 2 dae.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Terug by die plot sien presies hoe onvoorspelbaar die reen in hierdie omgewing is: Die reen kom uit die noorde, oor ons en beweeg suid waar dit weer omdraai en van 'n westelike rigting kom, weer oor ons! Ons ry dorp toe na die Kriels en ons monde hang oop oor die moeite wat hulle vir ons gedoen het, ek wonder stilweg hoeveel koedoes in die slag gebly het met die voorbereiding van hiedie feesmaal! :-) Net voor middernag maak Marnus sy verskyning as kersvader, hy is by verre die jongste van die partytjie en geniet sy gate uit om vir almal hulle keskenke te oorhandig. Frikkie het besluit om douvoordag al in die pad te val, ons pak 'n grondpad aan in die rigting van Torrabaai om na die versteende woud te gaan kyk. Ek en Marcel ry gou teen die berg op om die sonopkoms af te neem voor ons vertrek.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Teruggekom by die kamp kry ons die ander 2 nog vas aan die slaap in hulle tente! Ons jaag hulle op en kort voor lank is ons daar weg. Ons vind die versteende woud heel interessant en sien ook 'n hele paar welwitschias. Oppad terug stop Marcel ewe skielik, ek verwag die ergste en trek langs hom af. Gelukkig is daar niks verkeerd nie, inteendeel, hy het vorendag gekom met 'n ideale plan: neem 1 van die platgetrapte grensdraad pale en monteer dit aan die onderstel van jou motorfiets en whalah! Daar het ons nog 'n ryposisie bygekry en lyk soos wafferse 'n Harley Davidson 'gang'. &lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169421715964913586" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R715qXJHZ7I/AAAAAAAAARA/64G_ljJNCqM/s400/DART+(357).JPG" border="0" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Net voor Outjo begin die wolke saampak en ons word lekker afgekoel deur 'n reenbuitjie. Wynand en Marcel eet Cheeseburgers by die vulstasie (cheeseburgers is goedkoper as gewone burgers...) en glo vas dat dit van die lekkerste burgers is wat hulle al geeet het. Opad Otjiwarongo toe trek ons eers af om ons sakke te waterproof en trek ons reenjasse aan. Dit lyk hoogs waarskynlik dat ons sopnat gaan reen! Water stroom langs die pad maar ons is gelukkig en kry net 'n natmaker. Ons sit ons tog voort na Otavi en ry verby menigde vlakvarke wat lans die pad staan. Hulle is nie gewoond aan die hoë klank van ons Gomotos nie en skrik elke keer as ons naby kom. Een pyl reg op my af maar swenk gelukkig uit na regs net voordat ek cabanossis van hom kan maak. Die weer dreig maar weer is ons gelukkig om die grootste storm mis te ry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Otavi bel Frikkie die Kriel familie, ons ken hulle nie van 'n kant af nie maar hulle het goedhartiglik ingestem om ons oor kersfees te huisves op hulle plot net buite die dorp. Ons ontmoet ook uiters vreemde Amerikaners van Origan wat my aan die Armish mense laat dink. Hulle geografiese kennis is weglaatbaar klein, hulle weet nie waar Johannesburg is nie en nog minder Suid Afrika, wonder of hulle 'n idee het waar hulle hulself tans bevind. Twee van hulle eet rou mielies wat hulle pas by 'n smous gekoop het...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Toe ons ophou lag ry ons weer verder, verby Baken na Grootfontein. Die keer is ons egter nie so gelukkig met die reen nie en reen sopnat. Ek en Marcel trek af net so voor skemer toe die son onderdeur die wolke breek. Meteens sien ons 'n reuse, vol reenboog met nog 'n reenboog reg agter hom. Die reen bedaar (of skep asem) ook vir 'n oomblik en ons stop en neem fotos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5169422420339550146" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R716TXJHZ8I/AAAAAAAAARI/wvbtETc4ZNE/s400/DART+(367).JPG" border="0" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Die Kriels se plot is ongeveer 7km voor Grootfontein en hulle het ons laat weet dat ons moet uitkyk vir 'n kombi aan die regterkant van die pad - hulle wag sowaar vir ons om vir ons die pad aan te dui! Hulle bly in die dorp maar het onlangs hierdie plot (Plot in Namibie = plaas in Suid Afrika) gekoop waarop hulle met uithourit perde teel. Hulle maak seker ons is tuis voor hulle weer groet. Ons eet gou weer ietsie (ja, 2minute noodles en tuna...), trek droog aan en gaan slaap. Ons trek weg in die rigting van Uis. Dit gaan maar stadig veral met Frikkie wat nie so lief is vir sand nie. Jy moet bereid wees om ‘gas’ te gee sodra jy sand sien, ons het ongelukkig nie die krag onder ons om ons uit die sand te trek nie, die versneller is gewoonlik reeds vol oop wanneer jy die sand tref! Uis is ongeveer 115km van Hentiesbaai en ons ry weer verby die Spitskoppe aan ons regterkant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R6wvaqvb7XI/AAAAAAAAAP4/odG90G2R3Ug/s1600-h/DSC_7651.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R6wvaqvb7XI/AAAAAAAAAP4/odG90G2R3Ug/s400/DSC_7651.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164555007883472242" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Net voor Uis kry ons ‘n kristalstalletjie of 2 en so ook toe ek in die dorp inry. Ek stop by so paar manne wat in die son sit en Black Label drink en vra eers uit oor die geskiedenis van die dorp. Daar is blykbaar net 6 strate in die dorp en die wit sandhope net buite die dorp is die laast eoorblyfsels van ‘n tinmyn wat na Namibie (of soos Marcel sê Nambabwe!) se onafhanklikwording deur sy Suid Afrikaanse eienaar agtergelos is omdat hy nie verder die myn kom bedryf onder die nuwe regering nie. Die ironie is dat kort voor lank is die myn geplunder van al die masjinerie en implimente en lê nou daar soos ‘n seer oog. My dronk Damara vriend vertel my ook van die Brandberg waar die kristalle gemyn word. Kristalversamelaars van oor die wereld kom hierheen om kristalle te koop. Ek bedank die mannetjie en hy kry dit reg om ‘n vieslike, pers kristal aan my te smous. Net toe kom die res van die garde daar aan en ons koop gou ‘n versnappering by die supermark voordat ons noord draai in die rigting van Khorixas. Die landskap verander in ‘n pragmooi prentjie en ons probeer dit in ons breine inprent. Die eningste ding wat egter ingeprent word is die dr*l Gautenger se nommerplaat wat rakelings om ‘n besondere sanderige draai jaag. Dit help nie eens ek wys vir hom wat ek van hom dink nie, dis net stof waar jy kyk. Ek hoop egter hy stop sodat ek hom met my helmet deur sy venster kan groet. Na ‘n paar minute bedaar ek weer en ons (minus Frikkie) ry lekker met die wind in ons blaaie.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R6wxtavb7ZI/AAAAAAAAAQI/54LfJ9bS-6Q/s1600-h/DSC_7656.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R6wxtavb7ZI/AAAAAAAAAQI/54LfJ9bS-6Q/s400/DSC_7656.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164557529029275026" border="0" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Ek stop om die boude te rus en sien olifantspore reg langs die plek waar ek stop. Ons volg die spore tot by die grensdraad en sien hoe hy sonder moeite die houtpaal platgeloop het en besef net weer die krag wat so groot dier kan uitoefen. Ons is uiters dankbaar toe ons uiteindelik weer teer sien. Daar wag 2 verkeersbeamptes ons voor by 'n padblokkade net buite Khorixas. Die beamptes is uiters vriendelik en ek verduidelik dat ons vierde kameraad nog agter ons. Aangekom in Khorixas maak ons weer vol en ry na Khorixas kampeerterrein net buite die dorp. Die plek is baie netjies en net toe ons tente op is arriveer Frikkie. Die verkeersbeamptes het glo lekker vir hom gelag en presies vir hom gesê hoe lank gelede ons al daar verby is en dat hy bietjie vinniger moet ry. Hy het 'n harde dag agter die rug maar ons almal is darem in een stuk in Khorixas. Feite:  Die baai is vernoem na Hentie van der Merwe van ouds!  (Hulle is ook ooralsJ)Na al die stories wat my vriend Herman Smit (Oud Grootfonteiner) met ‘n glimlag op sy gesig vir my vertel het van sy vakansies in Henties, is ons weg uit Swakop met groot verwagtinge van Henties baai.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Jy kan maklik die soutpaaie van die geweste verwar met teerpaaie, en is in goeie toestand.  Die paaie kan glo bietjie glibberig raak as dit reen, maar met Swakopmund se 15mm reenval per jaar is dit duidelik nie ‘n probleem nie.  Die +-70km tussen Swakop en Henties, staan die vissermanne klipgooi van mekkaar af met lyne in die water  en dop in die hand, met hoop op die groot vangs.  Ons het by jakkalsputz kampterrein afgedraai, net voor Henties om te hoor of hulle verblyf het.  Behalwe vir sand, koue wind en son is daar maar weinig, en ons besluit om maar die skaars verblyf wat Henties in hoog seisoen wegsteek te gaan opsoek.  Daar aangekom is ons tegemoet gegroet deur Johann, die Yswinkel eienaar ( wat toe ook vir ons verblyf oor Kersfees gereel het by die gasvrye Kriel gesin op Grootfontein) in die regte rigting gestuur, waar ons toe goedkoop en baie lekker verblyf gekry het by Eagles overnight.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Van hier het ons Henties te voet aangedurf, en gou besef dat hier twee sportsoorte beoefen word, naamlik visvang en hengel!  Siende dat ons nie van vistokke of enige visvang kennis of vernuf beskik om van te praat nie, het ons maar by “Pirates Cove” ingeval vir ‘n hengelsessie, gepaardgaande met so bietjie “pool” en later was ons vermaak deur ‘n “karaoke” kompetisie gelei deur die onmiskenbare “elmboogman”.  Dieselfde elmboogman sou ons die daaropvolgende aand vermaak met sy verbasend vernuftige kitaarspel en “covers” van Dire Straits.  Ons was bederf met die Duitse smulkosse en al die lekkernye wat Swakop se spense met ons gedeel het die afgelope paar dae, maar in Henties,…die vissersdorp, moes ons ver soek vir  vis en tjips! Dit is ‘n bewaringsgebied waar daar hordes en plate robbe teel en vrek, en vrek en teel.  Dit is nogals ‘n belewenis om die plek te besoek, en daarmee bedoel ek nie noodwendig aangenaam nie.  Dit was nou teel seisoen, en daar was baba robbe so ver as wat die oog kan sien.  Oulik, hoor ek jou vra?  Dit was sif!  Daar is omtrent ewe veel dooie baba robbe as lewendigge robbe.  Opgeblaas, afgeblaas, heel, half heel, half, kwart, met oorblyfselfs wat ‘n woestynjakkals die vorig nag nie als kon inkry nie, en daar staan en pik ‘n seemeeu aan ‘n opgeblaasde een se oogbal.  Ten minste vlieg daar ‘n string pienk flaminke oor ons koppe, om ons te herinner aan die mooi wat elders bestaan.  Die reuk wat in die lug hang, en in jou klere intrek ruk jou weer terug na die werklikheid om jou , en die trane van naarheid dam op in jou oe..  Ons is haastig daar weg om van die reuk weg te ry, maar sou eers later weer agterkom dat daai reuk net deur OMO verwyder kan word. Die mense van Henties was weer vriendeliker as wat jy kon verwag, en ons is selfs twee borde vingeretes aangebied deur die vriendelikke fraai  dame by die petrolstasie se wegneem etes.  Ons het nou wel nie ons lyne in die atlanties natgemaak, of in die unieke rivierloop sand gholfbaan gespeel nie, maar Henties het verseker ‘n onvergeetlike stop op ons avontuur geword, maar dit was weer tyd om die ponies (gomoto’s) op te saal, en diekeer weer sandpaaie van die Namib woestyn aan te pak en te tem, deur Uis, bestemming Khorixas. We know... not nearly as exciting!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R5743qvb7VI/AAAAAAAAAPo/HGWy9L8qF7c/s1600-h/DSC_7980.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZoJPzjPsuVg/R5743qvb7VI/AAAAAAAAAPo/HGWy9L8qF7c/s400/DSC_7980.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160835858262912338" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The trip went extremely well – we managed to cover just about 9000km and saw some of the most breathtaking and incredible scenery. The bikes behaved very well... even after a few minor AND major crashes! A bit of 'bush mechanics'... i.e. bending the fork back so that the particular bike runs tracks only 15cm apart and not 35cm, saved the day on more than one occasion! hehe...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We completed our journey on the 4th of January. We are, however, still uploading our diary bit by bit (as you might have noticed). We apologise that it's only happening in small increments – earning a living takes up a lot of your time!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thank you for all the support and messages! We decided to hit the town and was very surprised by how clean and safe Windhoek felt. Compared to other African cities it is the cleanest city by far, including South African. The German influence is evident everywhere, especially their food, we treat ourselves for a delicious club sandwich in the mall. We walk through Zoo park to the Tintenpalast, these days the parliament building. In front of the church we speak to an interesting Damara from Khorixas who sells art-on-plant ivory, better known as Lalapalms.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Liela from Beeld phone us for a follow-up article, unaware that we are paying R12/min roaming charges. One thing that is still ages behind in Namibia is internet bandwidth, luckily we manage to send her 2 pictures in 30min!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We pack up and left just after 14:00 and there is no mercy from the sun, I am sure we will be able to bake eggs on our petrol tanks. In Okahandja we fill up again and enjoy the scenery with many game farms flashing by, passed the Spittskoppe on our right hand side. 15km past Usakos the terrain changes again - you get the desert feeling but this time it is much lighter in colour - almost a white colour. 30km outside Swakopmund Frikkie almost got run over by a minibus, reminding us of the dangers of what we are attempting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Entering Swakop we stop at the first filling station where Wynand an Marcel are waiting for us. They are in a deep conversation with a guy on a huge KTM, he turns out to be the owner of Midas and have seen us on 2Wheels on Supersport the previous evening and invite us to get supplies at his store. He also recommend that we stay at the Barracks. After a minor mix-up with the street names (they got changed recently), we found the place but there's nobody to help us so we decided to camp for the night at N$15pp. There is disagreement within the team on where we should camp but in the end we stick to the original position - worried that our worldly possessions might get stolen. We decide to "cool down" with a Hansa Draught and had an excellent meal at The Lighthouse. On our way back we heard laughter and screams at the pub across the street, Bacchus Taverna and decided to pop in for a nightcap. Wynand had enough and retired to the tents, Marcel and myself followed shortly but Frikkie decided to stick with Helga, Olga and the rest of the "happy" local Germans. :-)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Day 12 - Day 18 (Swakopmund area)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At last, our first rest day! The original idea was to stay here for 2 or 3 days and then move on but this is a roadtrip - we can do whatever we want to. We were told by 'real bikers' that we should reconsider taking the Kaokoland route west of Etosha due to extremely bad roads, therefore, we can stay a bit longer in Swakop. Today is our first rest day and after a good night's sleep we invaded this lovely town. Woermann, Brock (WB) is comparable to a Pick n Pay with the exception that WB has a huge food bar with prominent German influence. We enjoy a brotchen with buckwurst and tomato, onion, sauerkraut, cucumber etc. for only R8,00 (The same as a Hansa Draught)!&lt;br /&gt;For the next few days we stay inside the barracks, our room consists of 32 beds, 3 toilets and 4 showers with no hot water and a clinical smell...The weather in Swakop is at least 10 degrees cooler. Tiger bar was one of our favourite pastimes with delicious chips and beer and a typical island feel. The sun is extremely dangerous because of the cool breeze; you don't feel the sun until it is too late! Just go to the main beach and you will see the pink tourists there...&lt;br /&gt;Over the next few days we visited the acquarium, crystal museum, every single pub and had "Stewels" at Swakop Brauhaus - a 2liter glass shoe filled with...ummm...beer!&lt;br /&gt;We also visited Walvisbay, which was one of our most amazing days: We met up with a guy from Romania, his name is Ion and he had so much to share about Walvis bay. We were a bit tired from the previous night's fun and games and was planning to visit Dune 7 and head back home but then Ion arrived on his huge 1400 Suzuki cruiser, told us he recognized us from 2-Wheels and would like to show us around. From our conversations it turns out that he is the founder member of the Live-to-Ride club in Walvisbay and we all had a ride on his 1400 cruiser - that is power! We met some of the other member as the local pub and was forced to drink Jägermeister shots! After that Ion showed us his home - he is so passionate about everything, especially bikes. Five hours later we left Walvis bay and just made it to Dune 7 before it was dark. Die wind is in ons blaaie so ons ry heel lekker. Wynand probeer 'n foto met sy kamera neem maar die vibrasies van die enjin het sy eerste slagoffer ge-eis en wys slegs 'n wit skerm. Frikkie se wielslot het afgeval met die geskud en so ook my klein tripod.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ons ry in die Richtersveld Transfrontier Park na Sendelingsdrift. Die grenspos is deur Dr. van der Walt aanbeveel - ek het sy nommer in die Weg tydskrif gekry en volgens hom is dit die mooiste grenspos in Suider Afrika en die aansluitingspaaie is uitstekend. Die amptenare is baie vriendelik maar gaan deur al ons goed, ons is die eerste mense wat die dag met die pond oor die Oranjerivier in Namibie ingaan wat met 'n motorbootenjin aangedryf word. Sodra jy oor die grens is draai jy regs en ry al langs die Oranjerivier. Ons kry lafenis van die hitte in die rivier en beweeg weer aan in Ausenkehr se rigting. Frikkie val 2 keer - die 2de keer was relatief hard en hy buig sy vurk. Ons buig hom gou reg en gelukkig is die Gerber tools ook naby.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ons ry verder en hoor visarende se geskree in die verte. Wynand en Marcel gaan haal drinkwater by Ausenkehr se wynplaas terwyl ek en Frikkie solank ry en soek vir kampplek in die woestyn. Die uitsigtemet die sonsondergang is asemrowend, dis asof moeder natuur haar asem ophou - alles is doodstil. Ons kry 'n lekker kampplek wat redelik teen die wind beskerm is langs 'n soutpan. Ewe skielik kry ek die mense wat in Gauteng is jammer - hulle jaag nou werk toe, nie eens bewus dat die son besig is om die 'n nuwe dag in al sy glorie aan te kondig nie. Ons is werklik bevoorreg om hier te wees en besef in ons klein wereldjie die grootheid van die Skepping. Die gruispas is in uistekende toestand en gou-gou is ons by Ai-Ais. Hulle is egter toe, besig om die hele plek oor te doen - Ai-Ais het die laaste paar jare 'n slegte naam begin kry, lyk vir my nog presies toe ek daar as 'n jong lat amper 20 jaar terug daar was. Ons ry Hobas toe, ek en Marcel stop gereeld om fotos te neem en ry soos 'n maniak om op te vang. Ek Cobus) ry deur 'n dippie met die son agter my, sien nie die dik sand aan die linkerkant en en voor ek my kom kry lê ek in die sand met die stof wat my omvou. Vir 'n oomblik het ek nie 'n idee waar my fiets is nie, staan op en voel aan my ledemate, net 'n grond'burn' op my arm. seer ribbes en geen asem. Die fiets het wonderbaarlik net 'ngebuigde vurk en ons buig hom gou reguit. Net 'n entjie verder stop ons by Cannőn Roadhouse vir 'n peri-peri hoenderlewer op geroosterde brood en toebroodjies - uitstekend! Van hier ry ons Seeheim toe, die pad hou net nie op nie en die kraai gaap van die hitte, boonop het ek 'n lek in my band en moet hom elke 10km in die warm son oppomp, die 'Sludge' in my wiel seël nie die gat nie waaroor ek relatief omgekrap is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dalk is dit te warm...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seeheim bestaan basies net uit 'n hotel, 'n baie mooi hotel daarby. Die band faal die toets en ons stop by Goageb (wat basies niet uit 'n vulstasie en kroeg bestaan) om hom te ruil en sommer vol te maak vir die pad na Luderitz. Dit is verbasend maklik om die Gomoto Freedom 125cc se agterband af te haal en in 'n japtrap is ons klaar. In die kroeg speel Steve se pampoen en is oorwegend blou hoewel daar ook ander provinsies se vlae hang. Daar is 'n paar mak dassies wat daar rond hardloop, 1 van hulle is volgens die eienaar 'n geharde brandewyndrinker!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dis 8uur en dit voel of iemand die oond op hoog gesit het, ons drink elk twee 500ml yskoue cokes, saal op in die rigting van Aus waar die wilde perde op ons wag.By Aus stop ons eers vir 'n pasty en die eienaars (2 broers) sê ons moet lemoensap koop om seker te wees van 'n sooibrand - hulle Rennies is glo naby aan hulle vervaldatum. Ons stop ook by die nuutgeboude inligtingsentrum wat heel indrukwekkend is - lyk of die regering die toerismepotensiaal raaksien.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ons soek die perde van Aus maar hulle ontduik ons, die wind waai verskriklik sterk van voor maar die natuurskoon maak darem gedeeltelik op daarvoor. Luderitz is dood op 'n Saterdagmiddag en dit lyk amper soos die spookdorp Kolmanskop so paar kilos uit die dorp. Ons kry verblyf in die Backpackers en die eienares is so gaaf om ons klere te was - moes ons seker van 'n afstand geruik het...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ons drink 'n bier en vertrek na Kolmanskop sonder permitte (die kantoor is reeds gesluit) en neem baie fotos, dis jammer dat die mense binne in die kamers rondloop - dit versuur die fotos. Ons ry na Shark-eiland en voel ewe skielik spyt dat ons nie die kamp opsie gevat het nie. Die wag by die hek sê dit gebeur nie baie dat dit windstil daar is nie, vandag roer daar nie 'n windjie nie!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ons eet 'n pizza by Ritzies en sien die eerste meisie in jare! Ons het gou ons chain-tentioners gestel en die kettings geolie. Ons maak gou vir ons elkeen 'n lekekr sterk boeretroos en iets om te eet en is daar weg met die wind wat ons van agter aanhelp - lekker! Sonder om 1 keer te stop ry ons tot by 'n uitkykpunt (deur lekker dik sand) waar ons uiteindelik die wilde perde van Aus sien. Die storie rondom die wilde perde is interessant maar die perde is nie so indrukwekkend nie. Ons sien 'n slang in die gras (letterlik!) en neem meer foto's van die slang as van die perde. Ons sien darem ook 'n mooi gemsbok wat stof opskop in die verte.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Tussen Aus en Goageb stop ek by 'n biltongstalletjie vir lekker Namibiese droëwors en biltong. Ek sukkel egter om dit in die ry te eet en by telkens my wange raak. Die ander wag al by Goageb se vulstasie toe ek daar aangerykom, vandag is heelwat warmer as gister en ons sien 'n vreemde verskynsel: reg bo ons is 'n wolk en ons kan sien dit is besig om te reën. Hoe verder die druppels egter van die wolk beweek hoe minder word hulle en amper alles verdamp voor dit die grond tref! Ons ry verder - in die rigting van Keetmanshoop en sien 'n paar motors wat lang die pad staan wat oorverhit het. Ons Gomoto's toon egter geen sulke gedrag nie en ons kom by Keetmanshoop by 'n supermark bymekaar vir ietsie om te eet. Soos elke keer as jy stop is daar 'n bedelaar of 2 en ons plathand amper een van die mannetjies. Ons draai noord van hier in die rigting van Mariental en het nog net 1uur rytyd oor toe ons natreën net voor Keetmanshoop se padblokkade. Dit bring egter korte lafenis teen die ongenadigde hitte, ons ry Tses se kant toe, stop op 'n brug om die sonsondergang met reën en donderslae af te neem, en kry 'n sms van Wynand - hy staan by Tses sonder petrol en die dronkies van Tses teister hom. Vandaar die nuwe uitdrukking as jy by 'n onaangename plek aankom "Tses verby".&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ons ry so 30km verder en sien die storm gaan ons vang, dit is al hoogs skemer en ons besluit om by 'n brug af te trek. Die pad is besaai met die dorings, daar geplaas om 'brugslapers' uit te hou. Dit skrik ons egter nie af nie en ons maak die area in 'n japtrap skoon, net betyds om die storm te mis. Gelukkig reen dit nie hard nie, net erge donderweer (ons is immers onder 'n brug - brue is vir water bedoel :-) ). Soos die geluk dit wou hê is daar 'n mooi pendoring in die middel van my loopvlag wat ek uittrek met 'n TSSSS! 'n nare geluid! Ons trek die fiets op die pad en vervang gou die band - eerste proleem opgelos... &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Die 2de probleem is dat ons laag op petrol is en Gibeon het nie petrol nie. Marcel is die eerste een wat sonder petrol gaan staan maar gelukkig kom Frikkie tot die redding met die petrolkan. Net hierna kry ons 2 fietsryers van voor. Hulle name is Philipp &amp;amp; Valeska en ry al meer as 'n jaar aan die Afrika kontinent en hoop om voor die einde van die jaar by Kaappunt te arriveer. Dan pak hulle die volgende en volgende kontinent aan (&lt;a href="http://www.2-play-on-earth.net/"&gt;http://www.2-play-on-earth.net/&lt;/a&gt;). Ek self kom tot so 30km buite Mariental voor die ponie ingee en ook 'n liter ingooi. Die laaste paar kilos voel soos 'n ewigheid en ons kan al die Wimpy ontbyt in ons helmets ruik. Die eerste ding wat ons vuilgatte bestel is natuurlik 'n Mega Wimpie koffie en gaan beter as ooit saam met die ontbyt af. Ons gooi amper 'n vloermoer oor 'n vrou wat reg onder die 'geen rook' teken 'n sigaret opsteek maar die 1ste vlak van Maslow se hierargie van benodighede neem oor. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ons ry deur 'n padblokkade en die beamptes is baie vriendelik en wens ons 'n voorspoedige reis toe. Daar is een of ander Dessert run in Swakop en baie voertuie met motorfietse ry verby en toet vriendelik. Op 'n stadium kom 'n reuse KTM by ons verby en dit lyk of ons parkering soek. Twee draai later stop hy en trek ons af - kan nie glo ons doen die trip nie en dink ons is van ons koppe af! Hy nooi ons om by hulle te oornag in Windhoek maar ons het reeds besluit op Puccini House soos deur Philipp en Valeska aanbeveel. Ons drink ons eerste Windhoek Lager in Winhoek en gaan eet lekker Pizzas by Sardinia. Toe ons daar arriveer kom 'n dronk man daar uitgevlieg en sê hy gaan ons fietse omloop as hy daar uitloop. Marcel hou kop en stel hom gerus, ons sal op 'n ander plek gaan parkeer. Die eienares kom toe uitgeharloop en vra groot verskoning vir die man se gedrag - hy is maar 'n ou drol. Dit het natuurlik die hele restaurant se aandag getrek en die omie moes baie klein gevoel het. Unfortunately the media launch yesterday took much longer than we anticipated and we only left the Steyn residence at 10am. We took the bikes to the highway, on route to Krugersdorp where we will turn off on the N14 towards Ventersdorp. Quite a lot of people noticed us from the Beeld article and hooted when passing. We drove a total of 470km and slept at Boereplaas in Vryburg. The Gomoto's are riding well with the load and the only problems was a speedo not functioning and a dead headlight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Day 2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We had a good night's rest and our aim was to reach Upington. Approaching Olifantshoek we were startled by dark clouds engulfing us from the west and decided to take cover at Veronica's Closet, a lovely coffee shop that opened the day before. The people were amazing and Sam, the lovely daughter and artist, made sure we were comfortable and happy. It started raining, thundershower after thundershower passed over. Later we heard that is was hailing huge brick-sized hail and said our prayers for deciding not to continue to Upington. We stayed at the Thuynsman's house or rather they took us in – in line with the charity trip we are doing!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Day 3&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We had to catch up after we lost riding time the previous day.Upington was really cold, we thought it will be unbearable hot! We visited a bikeshop to pick up spare tyres and met 2 Danish men who were very interested in our trip – they have a club in Denmark and ride around Europa on similar sized bikes as we are doing. We ride al the way to Pofadder and decided to call it a day. We camped at Rus'n Bietjie, Awie is running the place and was helping when we serviced the bikes. We visited the Kalahari Kafee, each had a "Moerse Burger" went for a drink at Pofadder Hotel afterwards.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Day 4&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We drove to Springbok, Steinkopf and Vioolsdrift. Wild Thing Adventures is a company doing trips on the Orange river. One group finished today and we had a few beers with them. The person running the place, Oompie is a real character and organized lam ribs, wors and mielies – all for free! We had loads of fun there and he showed us a secret wall in the bar where he had 106 g-strings of previous rowers that did one of their tours. He said we are crazy to do this trip and there is no way we will get up Helshoogte, he doesn't even drive his 4x4 up there!!! We went to bed in a worried state but had a good rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Day 5&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Helshoogte – very bad off-road terrain with long sand patches. We all had a tumble today but made in up Helshoogte, in one piece, or rather, in four pieces! We drove passed Eksteensfontein to Sanddrift for Petrol. They sent us to Baken but they were out of Petrol. We had to make a decision and decided to go to Alexander Bay for petrol. "I decided we should try and ride through South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana on the Gomoto Freedoms", said Steyn.&lt;br /&gt;The DART team which includes Wynand Steyn, Cobus van Wyk, Marcel du Preez and Frikkie van Eeden will traverse the open spaces for 6-8 weeks and plan to ride about 170km a day, although in areas where the terrain is easy, they plan to push 500km to 600km per day.&lt;br /&gt;"After departing on 1 December and heading for Namibia, we expect to cover the 1300km in about 3-4 days depending on the weather", said Steyn.&lt;br /&gt;"Apart from our unquenchable need for adventure this trip has a more selfless purpose. We have vowed to use the trip as a vehicle for the collection of donations towards our nominated organization. So many children are in desperate need of any help they can receive and we wish to give, even if it's only a little.&lt;br /&gt;According to Steyn, the team will have no back up support at all, but they will carry everything they require ? tents, mattress rolls and equipment.&lt;br /&gt;Concerning their menu, a look at their stock list indicates a lot of two-minute noodles, but DART are hoping to enjoy the local hospitality at all the dorps and towns they visit. Hulle hoop om R150 000 in te samel.&lt;br /&gt;“Ons vier is al van skooltyd af vriende en gedurig op soek na avontuur. Hoe groter die avontuur wat ons aanpak, hoe beter,” het mnr. Mar cel du Preez, grafiese ontwerper van die Wilgers in die ooste van Pretoria, gister gesê.&lt;br /&gt;Hy en sy drie avontuurvriende, mnre. Frikkie van Eeden, ’n prokureur van Faerie Glen, en Wynand Steyn en Cobus van Wyk, wat saam hul eie eiendomsonderneming het, het dié epiese tog al in Mei vanjaar begin beplan. What a success!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The trip proved invaluable in terms of the results we gathered.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our packing system is proving to be a great success. The Gomoto's feel extremely stable under the heavy load and the ride is in fact more comfortable and softer (the need for the sheepskins was definitely proven once again though!). The bags are extremely sturdy – we are wondering why we ever considered building aluminum panniers in the first place!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are aware of the critical need for sufficient water and the lack thereof we probably will encounter on sections of the tour. We have thus decided that we should be able to carry enough for at least a couple of days and successfully managed to do so on the Nelspruit tour. We each carried a 10l container with ease – combine this with more or less 2l of water in bladders (for each rider) and we should have in the region of 40 liters at our disposal (not 50l as you might of calculated as one rider will have to carry 10 liters of fuel instead).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We calculated the Freedoms' range to be less than we had bargained for (35km/liter is still excellent consumption for a heavily loaded vehicle of course!!) and have decided that it would be wise to carry extra fuel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Something else that we had to learn the hard way this weekend was the fact that mother nature is unpredictable and that you can either be prepared or face the consequences. We found ourselves on the Schoemans Kloof Pass in rain... we suddenly realised the need for waterproofing! Our bags did stay dry but it was hardly raining... and it was miserable! Hulle gaan in vyf weke ongeveer 6 000km deur Suider-Afrika aflê.Die groep vertrek op 1 Desember uit Kaapstad, reis dan noord na Namibië, deur Zambië, Botswana en terug tot in Pretoria."Wat die reis uniek maak, is dat ons dit op 125cc motorfietse gaan doen," sê Frikkie. Die motorfietse en parte word vir hulle geborg deur Gomoto."Ons sien daarna uit om die pad te verken. Plekke soos die Richtersveld, Lüderitz, Swakopmund, Epupa-watervalle, Okavangorivier en Caprivi-strook, daar is te veel plekke om op te noem," sê Cobus. Marcel en Frikkie is albei ook professionele fotograwe en kan nie wag om te begin foto's neem nie.Boonop het hulle besluit om dit as 'n fondsinsameling vir die Beeld-kinderfonds aan te pak. Cobus sê hulle wil soveel as moontlik geld vir liefdadigheid insamel.Gemiddeld wil die manne so 144 km per dag aflê. Dit verg fyn beplanning aangesien hulle presies moet uitwerk hoe ver elke petrolstasie uitmekaar geleë is."Ons weet dit is nou die regte tyd om dit te doen. I got off the phone with Wynand a bit earlier... the verdict is in: we've canceled our first, almost fully loaded, test run to Nelspruit on account of bad weather.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The bad:&lt;/span&gt; There are warnings of heavy thunder showers covering most of the route between Pretoria and Nelspruit (about 330kms). It's disappointing as we were looking forward a lot to this short intro to our adventure that kicks off in just two weeks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The good: &lt;/span&gt;Finally we have been forced to try out our pannier design (our own patent by the way – two 33l backpacks stitched to, and connected by webbing) and experiment with the luggage setup in general. More than 30 years of reliability was therefore one of the key factors in deciding on these workhorses. The other factor was fuel consumption. Have I mentioned that he has some catching up to do?!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, we cruised to Harties and from there. and on the spur of the moment made it all the way to Rustenburg and we were very pleased with the bikes. Each having done between 500 and 700kms the bikes are improving with every turn of the wheel. We knew that sore butts was going to be a problem but this is crazy! We are set on acquiring some sheep skins... apparently  it helps a lot with this sort of problem plus we have the added benefit of really... really cool looking bikes that could now match our camo helmets! hehehe...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having done our first longish run we have a better idea of what could and won't work concerning our panniers. We'll keep you posted and will have some photos ready the moment we have a prototype ready. Time is running out and we absolutely have to do some experimental runs with our bikes fully packed before we hit the long road!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try Hopefully we won't be mistaken for hostile army troops... hehehe...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our bikes also arrived this week – we collected them from House of Bikes in Montana on Wednesday. Frikkie still needs to collect his as there was a problem with the speedometer. It was quite an interesting experience driving the bikes back that afternoon as Cobus and Marcel tested their non-existing bike skills for the first time in 5 o'clock traffic... all in all it went exceptionally well!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We've been able to clock just over 300kms this week and the Gomotos are starting to settle very nicely. Our aim is to have a nice long ride on Saturday.
